2019 San Diego Comic-Con International is in the books. It did not disappoint. Film and television studios as well as video game and comic book companies descended upon San Diego to show their wares. As we’ve done in years past, ‘LLERO curated the highlights and hottest moments for 2019.  Read on to find out.

Top Gun: Maverick

One of the biggest surprises of the weekend – Tom Cruise made an appearance. Mr. Cruise brought Top Gun: Maverick with him. He introduced the teaser trailer in Hall H. Cruise noted he filmed the original in San Diego and the infamous bar scene where he sang “You’ve Got That Loving Feeling” was filmed across the street from Hall H. He also told the audience there is no CGI for the new flick it is all the real deal. Needless to day, it was a hit. Having racked up over 14 million views and even creating conspiracy theories since it dropped. Looks like Mr. Cruise has been able to tap into the nostalgia. Top Gun: Maverick arrives in theaters in 2020.

Marvel Introduces Phase 4 AND 5

Marvel returned to Comic-Con after an absence in 2018. As expected they announced their Phase 4 slate. We will see an Eternals film starring Angelina Jolie and Selma Hayek. Black Widow will hit the big screen and Scarlett With & Vision, Hawkeye, Falcon & Winter Soldier the small screen. But the biggest surprise came in the form of Phase 5. Marvel dropped news that as part of its Phase 5 slate, The Fantastic Four, Wolverine and the X-Men will return to the big screen under the Marvel banner, as will vampire hunter Blade.  Yet, the biggest reveal – two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali appeared on the stage and donned a Blade cap. Yes, indeed, he will be taking over the iconic role.

The Arrowverse

The CW was in the house and showed previews of upcoming seasons for Super Girl, The Flash, Black Lightning, Harley Quinn, Bat Woman and the final season of the show that launched the whole universe Arrow. WB and the CW also, gave a peek at this year’s cross over event – Crisis on Infinite Earths, with the big reveal that Superman will appear, and Brandon Routh will step back into the role of the big blue boy scout he played in Superman Returns.

Picard

CBS was also present in San Diego and brought along a second look at their stand-alone series Picard.  Star Trekker’s received a first look a few months back, however, the Picard SDCC trailer provides great new footage, a more in depth look at what story line for the series and it looks like some old fan favorites will be making appearances.

Watch Men

Aside from its Game of Thrones reunion, which turned out to be more noteworthy for the absence of it show creators, HBO gave Hall H a more in depth on its new  series Watchmen.  Looks like it’s a sequel. From the look of things, the masked vigilante Rorschach inspired some kind of gang or cult that staged a terrorist attack in which police officers were hunted down in their homes and murdered. That led to a world in which police officers hide their identity. The series is set to drop in October 2019.

Like we said, this 2019 San Diego Comic-Con did not disappoint!!!
