Get ready for another Marvel Comics-inspired film to grace our screens. The interwebs were buzzing today as the first trailer for Madame Web dropped.

The upcoming Madame Web film has been making headlines in recent months, and the first glimpse of the trailer is pretty buzz-worthy. The production boasts an all-star cast of established and up and coming talent alike, including Dakota Johnson (50 Shades of Grey), Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Latina starlet Isabella Merced.

Sony has released an official synopsis along with the trailer:

“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.”

As the trailer begins, we see a hazy silhouette of the titular character Madame Web (played by Dakota Johnson) setting the tone for the dark and magical world we will be transported to. The clip then shifts rapidly to scenes of intense action, where our heroes, including Sydney Sweeney and Isabella Merced’s characters, abound with supernatural abilities and magical powers, mixing in some good old millennial banter on top. The overall effect is to immerse viewers in the spellbinding atmosphere of this Marvel universe. We also get glimpses of the still unknown villain who seems to be a cross between Venom and Spider-Man.

Aside from the trailer’s teaser tone. The women are seen taking charge, leading the narrative and displaying their power. It seems we can expect a female-led story with complex and layered female protagonists. This sets the tone for a refreshingly new direction presented by Marvel.  Who despite prior offerings of Black Widow, She-Hulk and the recent The Marvels, still seems to underwhelming in that department.

Madame Web drops in theaters in February 2024. Until then peep the trailer here.
