Carmen Yulín Cruz

Fearless, dedicated and courageous. Just a few of the superlatives to describe the Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz. We like to think that she simply doesn’t suffer fools lightly, because in 2017 Mayor Cruz proved she doesn’t.

When Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, the mayor did what many politicians don’t. Got her hands dirty – both literally and figuratively. Rather than stand on a podium and give speeches she got out into the flooded streets of her city, wading through water to help citizens, assisting in obtaining food and supplies were received by the neediest. But she didn’t stop there. When POTUS and other U.S. officials attempted to spin doctor the success of relief efforts, she stood up to the President like no other before her.

"We are dying here" Cruz said in a September 29th press conference. "And I cannot fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world cannot figure out logistics for a small island of 100 miles by 35 miles long... People are drinking off a creek. So, I am done being polite. I am done being politically correct. I am mad as hell... So, I am asking the members of the press, to send a mayday call all over the world. We are dying here... And if it doesn't stop, and if we don't get the food and the water into people's hands, what we are going to see is something close to a genocide."

Yet, that wasn’t the end of her efforts. When it was revealed that the contract procurement process for the repair of Puerto Rico’s now decimated electrical grid was improperly awarded, she again sounded the alarm, calling for the contract to be voided…and it was.
Do you agree with Carmen Yulín Cruz as
one of 'LLERO's 2017 Hot Latinas of the Year?

What’s next for Cruz? She continues to advocate on behalf of the recovery efforts and her past and present efforts, garnered her a nomination for Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, more importantly many are calling for her to make a run for Governor of Puerto Rico in 2020.

Fearless, dedicated and courageous…. that’s hot!
