When we think about clean-living, we are mostly thinking of our eating, drinking, and exercise habits. It’s great to focus on making healthier choices across these areas, yet sometimes we fail to take into consideration the space of our homes and how we can ensure that we are also keeping them a healthy place for us and our families to live. When it comes to this topic, there is much about the home space that you may have overlooked the importance of without realizing. Let’s attempt to shed some light on these areas.

Consider Your Cleaning Products

Most traditional cleaning products are made up of powerful chemicals that will pollute the air you are breathing in when used. It’s a better health choice to opt for green cleaners that do not contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine or ammonia. The products which state themselves to be biodegradable are safer. You can also go for making your own cleaning products at home which can prove just as effective; for instance vinegar is an excellent alternative to bleach, and baking soda can also be great to scrub with too. (Sure vinegar isn’t the greatest smelling to clean with, but it’s way healthier, and you can light some lovely candles afterward!)

Beware of the Dust

Dust contains more harmful chemicals that you may have been initially aware of; as well as generally making allergies flare up or irritating the skin. Make sure that you are vacuuming your home at least twice a week along with mopping and scrubbing all those hard to reach areas that gather pesky cobwebs. It’s also best to go for wood or stone floors instead of carpets if you want to keep dust levels at bay as much as you can. Another thing that you can do to combat against dust (and mold too) is to purchase a dehumidifier. Let’s take a look at a few of the benefits of having one.

Dehumidifiers

These machines function by reducing the humidity levels so that your home is then less prone to mold, mildew, or dust mites, all of which can reach havoc on allergies and your general health. Dehumidifiers can also help to prevent any irritation and discomfort to your respiratory system and your skin too. Because they help to reduce dust levels, you won’t need to spend as much time cleaning anymore (yes please)!

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The space of the home is more dangerous than people think when we consider the threat of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide has no colour, odor, or taste, which is why it is referred to as a ‘silent killer.’ It is produced from the incomplete burning of fuel so anything you burn around your home could end up producing carbon monoxide in the right conditions. Only a very small amount of carbon monoxide can be dangerous, and without the appropriate amount of ventilation, the gas can end up building to dangerous levels. This is why you shouldn’t neglect to fit a carbon monoxide detector in your home; health-wise it really is top of the to-do list.

Rethink Pesticides

If you need to use pesticides around your garden and home to keep those pests at bay, you may want what you rethink if this is an absolute necessity. Having these chemicals around is not suitable for your health nor the health of your children. It’s better to try and keep pests like ants or mice etc. away by cleaning up and storing food as carefully as you can. When it comes to your garden space, of course, you’ll want your garden to look lovely. Yet, you may want to think if you can do without the use of herbicides and instead just put up with a weed or two for the sake of a healthier space? If your not sure about this, try removing your weeds by hand.

Filter Your Water

If you invest a water filter, to filter your tap water at home, you could be further contributing to making your home a healthier space. This is because your tap water can sometimes contain contaminants, for instance, E.coli or lead that you will want to filter our before you drink. This are affordable and worthwhile purchases to help you and your family make healthier choices.

Overall, it’s easy to have overlooked some of the above ideas but don’t stress, now that your thinking about it- such areas won’t take very long to implement. Once these good practices are in place, you can forget about them without worrying anymore. Combining these ideas with healthy eating and plenty of exercise will set you up just perfect!
