Lela Loren
In the summer of 2015 the Starz cable network launched the second season of its hip-hop crime drama Power. Executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, one may have thought it was just another vanity project. Think again, this show had folks talking in the blogosphere, the barbershop, clubs and pubs about each and every episode. One undeniable reason for that is Latina Lela Loren, who plays buttoned-up AUSA Angela Valdes. Loren’s character is on the hunt for the city’s most notorious drug dealer who she is also unknowingly dating. As for Loren, the Sacramento native, feels just as determined to nail the role to the tee telling Glamour Magazine “If you are playing a Hispanic character who has to speak in dialect or in an accent—nail that dialect or accent. When I hear a character that’s supposed to be Cuban, speaking with a Mexican accent or vice versa, it grates on me and immediately pulls me out of the story. So I don’t think Hispanic actors should limit themselves, but I don’t think that’s an excuse not to be accurate.” Damn, were loving the work, work ethic and ambition.
