In a historic showdown at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Terence “Bud” Crawford cemented his legacy by defeating Canelo Alvarez via unanimous decision. The victory made Crawford the first boxer in history to achieve undisputed champion status in three weight classes during the four-belt era.
Crawford, who moved up two weight classes for the fight, showcased his signature speed and precision, outmaneuvering Alvarez and landing effective combinations. Judges scored the bout 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113 in favor of Crawford. Although Canelo landed effective shots, Crawford was able to not only withstand them, but stay in the pocket and land of shots of his own. A move that paid dividends to get Canelo’s respect, but also allow Crawford to control the pace and momentum throughout the fight. Never was this more apparent in Rounds six and nine. Key turning points in the bout that established Crawfords superior position.
Reflecting on his victory, Crawford said, “This is what greatness looks like. I came here to prove I belong among the best, and I did just that.” Meanwhile, Alvarez, gracious in defeat, remarked, “A defeat does not define me. I came to take risks, and I’ll continue to do so.”
As for what’s next, Crawford’s historic win gives him the ability to choose whomever, whenever and totally on his terms. Alvarez, on the other hand, though providing signals that he remains determined to bounce back and continue his storied career. Also gave glimpses of a man who may be ready to call it day, pointing to his achievements in the sport and the wear and tear on his body.
