Querida Familia 1

“We’ve got your back.” That was the message Latino Hollywood sent via their Querida Familia letter which was published on August 16, 2019. Querida Familia is an open letter to the immigrant and Latino communities offering support and encouragement in the wake of anti-Latino and immigrant attacks in recent weeks.

News and media outlets such as the New York Times, El Nuevo Herald, El Diario and La Opinión published the letter upon its release. In addition the initiative has a social media component. With the letter posted on social media platforms and employing the hashtag #QueridaFamilia.

The catalyst for the letter was the targeted, anti-Latino mass shooting in El Paso that killed 22 people. Followed the next day by ICE raids on food manufacturing plants in Mississippi. As well as the family separations and mistreatment of immigrants at the US-Mexico border.

“This message isn’t about policy or political parties,” said Eva Longoria, an co-organizer of the statement. “It’s about love and decency, and it’s about bringing humanity back into the conversation.”

Additional organizers of the letter and effort include America Ferrera, Diane Guerrero, Alex Martinez Kondracke, Mónica Ramírez and Olga Segura.

Over 200 “actors, activists, leaders and business people” have signed onto the initiative. Noteworthy artists include Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ricky Martin, Edward James Olmos and Selena Gomez. Everyone signed the letter to “demonstrate our love for the Latinx community and our country,” according to the QueridaFamilia.org.
