You’ll likely see and feel benefits from going to the gym no matter how much effort you put in while you’re there. After all, any level of exercise — even thirty minutes of light gym work — is better than none at all.

Still, if you’re going to go through the effort of paying for a gym membership, traveling there, and working out, then you’ll hope to get as much benefit as possible. The good news is that there are plenty of easy adjustments anyone can make that can improve their gym performance, without radically changing what they’re currently doing. Take the following tips on board, and you should find that you’re making more progress, more quickly.

 

Go At Your Preferred Time

You might go to the gym twice and find that you have significantly different performance levels. While no one can expect to have a great workout every time they go to the gym, it’s best to gently increase the chances. One way to do that is by going at your preferred time. 

For example, if you’re currently going after work, when your energy levels are already low, then it might be worth switching to morning sessions. Alternatively, if you’re always slow and unmotivated in the mornings, then going at a time when you’re more alert would make more sense.

 

Feed Your Body

Your gym outcomes are half based on what you do while you’re at the gym, and half based on what you feed your body. You can’t expect to have optimal outcomes if you’re continually eating ultra-processed foods after your workout.

But it’s not just about eating healthy. Supplements such as creatine monohydrate and protein have been shown to be highly effective at giving your body what it needs to recover and build muscle. They’re easy to take, too, especially if you put your daily allowance into a delicious smoothie. 

 

Spend Five Minutes Warming Up

We get it: spending time warming up usually isn’t ideal, especially when you only have minimal time at the gym and want to spend as much of it working out as possible.

But there are good reasons why the fittest people at the gym spend at least five minutes warming up. Not only is it a great way to prevent injuries, but it also primes the body to deliver its best performance. When you start taking the time to warm your body up, you should find that you significantly increase the number of “good workout” days you have at the gym. 

 

Put Together a Great Workout Playlist

Putting together a great gym playlist really can make a difference to your performance. While it ultimately comes down to personal preference as to what songs make it onto the playlist, having high-tempo songs that provide energy can have a subtly positive impact on your determination to have a great workout. Go through your favorite songs, pick out the ones that give you the “let’s go!” feeling, and then put them onto a collected playlist. Simple!
