Aubrey Plaza & Melonie Diaz

'LLERO Editors

Who says that funny or serious girls can’t be hot? Not us! This year these two indie girls made us do a double take so we had to give them their props.

This first alt-loving darling we were drooling over was “Parks & Recreation” deadpan hysteric Aubrey Plaza. The half-Puerto Rican comedic actress got her start in The Upright Citizens Brigade doing improv, after many internships, she took her talents further by appearing in web-series and eventually landing supporting roles in films like Funny People with Seth Rogen and Scott Pilgrim v. the World. This year she took it to another level, with her star turn in the movie The To Do List securing her rep as a bankable actress. With two films slated for 2014, Life After Beth and About Alex, we’re excited to see what else the pretty/sarcastic star has up her sleeve.

Melonie Diaz, first caught our attention as Juicy Judy’s BFF in the independent hit movie Raising Victor Vargas. Ms. Diaz is a down-home Boricua who’s been earning her acting cred since her 2002 debut. Although the 29-year old had roles on hit TV shows like “Law & Order” and “Nip/Tuck” Diaz never left her indie roots far behind. She continuously appeared in critically successful films like Lords of Dogtown and Be Kind Rewind with other heavy hitters like Mos Def and Robert Downey, Jr. Already an indie film queen, she became a certified star this year with her role as Sophina in the dramatic film about real life tragedy, Fruitvale Station. In 2014 she’ll not only appear on the hit HBO show “Girls” but will also be appearing along side Hollywood heavyweights Dustin Hoffman and Adam Sandler in The Cobbler.
