On Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Texas, hometown hero Errol Spence delivered a victory over fellow champion Yordenis Ugás. Spence stopped Ugás in the tenth round, but not before nearly being stopped himself.
The fight opened with Ugás asserting his size which seemed to give Spence fits in the opening round. Spence however, quickly adjusted and according to formal scorecards took four of the first five rounds. Then came Round Six. Ugás connected with a brutal right hand sending Spence mouthpiece flying. The referee halted the action to allow Spence to retrieve it. But Ugás again connected with a left hand followed by a right. Blows that sent Spence careening into the ropes for what arguably could and should have been called a knockdown.
Spence however stormed back to hurt Ugás repeatedly to the body and eye in Round Seven. By the tenth round, Ugás’ right eye was completely shut when referee Laurence Cole stopped the contest for the second time to allow the ringside physician to inspect the damage.
The doctor advised Cole to stop the bout at 1:44 of the tenth round, giving Spence the victory, a third welterweight belt and some momentum to call out Terence “Bud”Crawford. Spence undeniably did the latter after the victory telling the ring interviewer “Everybody knows who I want next. I want Terence Crawford next. That’s the fight I want, that’s the fight everybody else wants. I’ve got these straps, I’m gonna go take his shit, too. Man down. It’s strap season, baby. Terence, I’m coming for that motherfucking belt.”
Spence vs. Craword is the bout boxing and it’s fans have been clamoring for. And apparently so is Errol Spence. Until then see the highlights of Spence vs. Ugás here.
