Early Life and Beginnings

Born on July 16, 1948, in Panama City, Panama, Ruben Blades was destined for greatness. His mother was a musician and his father an athlete, percussionist and graduate of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. So, it’s no surprise that Ruben inherited a blend of talent, discipline, and a love for arts. Growing up in Panama, he was exposed to a rich tapestry of musical influences, from traditional Latin sounds to American rock and jazz.

Rise to Stardom

In Blades’ early days, he was a vocalist in Los Salvajes del Ritmo, and a songwriter and guest singer with a professional Latin music ensemble, Bush y sus Magníficos. Blades’ career took a significant turn when he moved to New York City in the 1970s. It was here that he found his footing in the salsa music scene, collaborating with the iconic Fania All-Stars and collaboration with its then band leader Willie Colon.

His unique style, poetic lyrics, and compelling storytelling quickly set him apart. His music often explores themes of social justice, love, and the human condition, making his work timeless and relevant resonating deeply with fans across Latin America and beyond. Hits like “Pedro Navaja” and “Plastico” not only entertained but also provided social commentary.

Blades proved to be not just a talented performer but songwriter as well, In 1978, Blades wrote the song “El Cantante” Colón convinced him to give the song to Colón’s former musical partner, Hector Lavoe who recorded it that same year, and it became both a big hit and Lavoe’s signature song.

Acting and Political Career

Apart from his musical achievements, he has also made significant contributions to film and television. He has appeared in over 50 films, including performing alongside Hollywood icons such as Richard Pryor in Critical Condition, to Denzel Washington in Safe House, Robert DeNiro in Hands of Stone and television series like Fear the Walking Dead. His work has earned him critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase in the acting world.

But Blades’ talents don’t stop at entertainment. He has also been a vocal advocate for social and political issues. A Harvard graduate, in 1994, he ran for president of Panama, demonstrating his commitment to making a difference in his homeland. Although he didn’t win, his campaign inspired many and highlighted the power of using one’s platform for positive change.
