Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez aka Loma Lopez goes down tonight. The fighters will face off at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many are hailing this fight as the potential “Fight of 2020”. Why?
First in this alphabet soup of boxing titles with no less that four champs in every division, this is a unification bout. Lomo’s WBC belt and Lopez IBF belt are on the line. Second, we have the pound for pound best in Lomo facing a rising and undefeated star in Lopez. Lopez is no slouch and many critics and pundits believe Lomo will face his stiffest competition to date. Many of those same critics and pundits have the fight as a toss up, with no clear favorite to win.
Finally, it’s free! In this day and age when promoters are asking fans to plunk down large sums for pay-per-view fights or offering underwhelming subscription services, this marquee bout, between two legitimate champions in their prime will be available on basic cable. Good for the fans and their wallets, but good for the sport. As you now have the potential to draw in the common sports fan who may not otherwise plunk down the money.
