In what has become a yearly ritual Canelo Alvarez stepped into the ring for Mexican Independence Day weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This year’s opponent was Edgar Berlanga. Berlanga is a young undefeated fighter, hailing from New York but of Puerto Rican descent. The latter an element that was promoted as adding the long historical rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico in the ring. Although the bout was not highly anticipated, it did not disappoint. The opening rounds were a display of calculated aggression from both fighters. Canelo, known for his precise technique and power, started strong, landing several clean shots. Round four and five saw Canelo continue to walk and stalk Berlanga down, staying close enough to prohibit Berlanga from using is 6’1 height advantage and properly extend and connect with shots of his own. Then in what was perhaps one of the more exciting rounds, in round five things got heated between the two. Each complaining of low blows, rabbit punches and cheap shots. Despite getting bested Berlanga had no shortage of smack talk for Canelo.
The middle rounds saw a shift in momentum. Canelo was now clearly in a rhythm, utilizing his experience to control the pace of the fight. His body shots started to take a toll on Berlanga, who from hand speed to power and defense was struggling on all fronts. After round ten, Berlanga’s corner told him to show something, or they would call the fight. Berlanga answered the call and showed resilience as he continued to push forward, looking for opportunities to counter.
The final rounds were a testament to the endurance and skill of both fighters. Canelo, sensing victory, remained aggressive but cautious, ensuring he maintained control. Berlanga, though visibly fatigued, refused to back down, showcasing the fighting spirit that has earned him a dedicated fan base. The bout concluded with both fighters standing, a true testament to their grit and determination.
The result was unanimous decision victory for Canelo. After the bout, Canelo told the press “I got a little angry with his tactics, but I’m Mexican man,” said Canelo. “It means a lot to fight on this day. It’s an honor to represent my country on this day.”
For his part Berlanga was gracious in defeat, “I’m upset because at the end of the day I’m a winner,” said Berlanga. “I fought a legend tonight and did my best to represent Puerto Rico. We’re fighters and we try to throw our opponent off their game. I took his best shot, and I knew I could take his punches and return them. I could have jabbed a lot more, but I was in there with a legend.”
The bigger question is what’s next for Canelo. He’s dominated “most” of his division. We say “most” because he has been evasive about a much called for match up with David Benavidez, who many view as a legitimate threat to Canelo. Instead, Canelo has his sights set on avenging a defeat against Dmitry Bivol. Bivol for his part say he has no interest in a rematch right now. So, the musical chairs will continue.
