Canelo vs. Sergey Kovalev delivered. So did Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez made history by winning a title in a fourth weight division. He earned the fourth strap by knocking out Sergey Kovalev in round 11 of their 12 round match up. Yet, the victory was not always assured. Throughout the fight Canelo was visibly frustrated with the long jab of Kovalev finding it difficult to connect in many instances. However, a steady part of Canelo’s strategy was a sustained body attack. One which paid dividends in the later rounds. As Canelo himself explained after the bout. He stated, “the plan overall was patience, that was basically it – to have patience. We knew it was going to be five, six rounds and it was going to take some time for me to get him. But honestly he’s a great fighter. I’m new at this weight, new in this division. Much credit to him, he’s a great fighter, but we stuck to our game plan. It was delayed a little bit but overall it was successful.”
