Argentina has done it.  Winners of their first major title in over 28 years.  Of note, Lionel Messi finally wins his first medal in a blue-and-white shirt. Boca got the win over Brazil and a record-equalling 15th Copa America title last night in Rio de Janeiro.

The match however was a low scoring affair. The only goal coming from Angel Di Maria in the 22nd minute of  the first half.  In the second half Brazil poured on the pressure. Yet, even with five strikers on the field they could not tie it up against an Argentine defense led by Rodrigo De Paul. The match also featured 41 fouls that slowed down the pace, adding to the frustration of the hosts, while Argentina seemed content to simply defend their lead.

The win is especially sweet for Hall of Famer Lionel Messi, who had yet to bring a major back to his native Argentina.  Of the victory Messi told Reuters “I’m speechless, I knew my dream would come true, and where better than the Maracanazo and giving the title to the best in the world and fulfilling his dream.” Messi was also the tournaments co-best player along with Neymar.
