Jessica Mendoza
Like the crack of a homerun hit, Jessica Mendoza’s presence during a Major League Baseball playoff game was just as striking. The Gold and Silver Olympic softball medalist caught the attention of fans and foes alike when she became the first women and Latina in history to call an MLB playoff game between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees. Though she made her ESPN debut months earlier it was her post-season analysis that caught everyone’s attention. While most people were overwhelming supportive of the Latina making it to the big leagues, she received some visceral reactions from bros across social media who couldn’t believe a “woman” was in the booth. A fellow broadcaster even blasted her with insults and questioned her intelligence. The detractors did not deter the Stanford educated mother of two. After all she is a four-time All American softball player, a former Women’s Pro Softball League player who helped her team win a league championship and who actually knows the game. She even spent time as an analyst and commentator with regular appearances on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight in 2014. Since busting open a door that had previously been open a crack, Mendoza is just getting started.
