We Can Be Heroes
Mainstream America has only just caught on to the triple threat that is Gina Rodriguez. Her hit show Jane the Virgin and recent Golden Globe win for Best Actress have finally brought this Latina ingénue much deserved accolades, but we’ve known about Ms. Rodriguez since the Filly Brown days.
The Chicago native actually got her start performing in salsa competitions before heading to New York City, where she attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Steady theatre and television work would follow in shows such as Law & Order and Army Wives as well as a recurring role on The Bold and the Beautiful. However, the big screen would soon be calling and she would land roles in Our Family Wedding with America Ferrara and the aforementioned Filly Brown, for which she would demonstrate her hip-hop and spoken word chops and nab herself ALMA and Imagin Awards.
Yet, 2014 has truly proven to be a breakout year for Gina. Her show Jane the Virgin on the CW has become a critical darling and she capped it off with a Golden Globe win – the first in the networks history. Ohhh and there was that heartfelt acceptance speech. “This win represents a culture that wants to see itself as heroes” she said. How could you not fall a little in love with her after that?
