Every now and again we are lucky enough to witness movements in the arts. Whether it be film, music, or theatre. You can’t define it, but you know its happening. A wave of talent, a genre or material arrives and just creates a buzz making others want to follow. Think back to the mid-90’s when Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino ushered in a new school of independent film, or the early 2000’s when salsa music saw the likes of Marc Anthony, La India and Tito Nieves were making hits and folks jumping in the clubs. Well, it feels like we once again have a movement in our midst. With the likes of Latino artists such as J. Balvin, Nicky Jam and Miguel all killing it in their respective genres, the Latino crooner is alive and well. The latest artist looking to enter the fold is Messiah El Artista.
Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Harlem, Messiah came to New York City at the age of two, where he discovered his passion for music, and more specifically for Hip-Hop. Messiah’s current focus is to represent New York City, its Dominican roots and Latin culture, and shine light on the underground world of Spanish Hip-Hop and Trap.
Known as the “Spanish Remix King,” Messiah showcases a fusion of Hip-Hop, Trap and Reggae. Messiah got his initial props from his remixes of songs like “Hot Nigga” and “Commas.” He then teamed up with New York DJ Flipstar of New York’s Power 105 FM to release “It Was Time – Volume Two (Ya Era Tiempo).” It was then that his original work really started to catch on with such hits as, “Robinson Cano,” and “Grande Liga (Big League).” Since then he has worked and collaborated with various Latino and Reggaeton artists on songs, including J. Balvin, Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee, J Alvarez and Farruko.
All this grind has led to his first official single called “Sueño Mojado (Wet Dream)”, released in June and his first upcoming studio album, “Made In Europe” with DJ 40 (his resident DJ and producer) which will drop this month. According to Messiah, the lyrics of “Sueño Mojado” are based on dreaming about that special someone being next to you and then waking up to realize it was you guessed it – a wet dream. The single was recorded in the Dominican Republic, written by Messiah, produced by Evo Jedis, DJ Urba, Luis Romero, and engineered by DJ 40.
As for the album, it was inspired by Messiah’s time abroad. In early 2016, Messiah and DJ 40 hit the road on the “Tamo Lindo Euro Tour,” where they performed sold out shows in Spain, Holland, Italy and Switzerland. Throughout their time in Europe, Messiah got a taste of the European underground culture, which inspired him and DJ 40 to record the album on the road – the result is “Made In Europe,” which will feature 12 original tracks by Messiah.
“Sueño Mojado” is available on all digital platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Spotify and Pandora. “Made in Europe” will be released in July 2016.
