Summer is in full effect. That often means a revamp of your wardrobe. The heavy wool suits, sweaters and coats, need to give way to some lighter and looser materials to beat the heat. Whatever your style you need to make sure your wardrobe has solid foundations to build off. So before following the latest trend or breaking the bank on a piece you’ve had your eye on, here are some classics you should not be without.
What? White dress shirt
Why?
This is as classic as it gets. Its versatility is unmatched. A clean pressed white dress shirt can be worn to the office with a suit or blazer, but also made casual when paired with jeans and/or a V-neck sweater. Its biggest selling point: it will never go out of style and it defies seasons, appropriate for any time of the year. Whether your blue collar or white collar, make sure you own at least one. Consider it the franchise player of your wardrobe—in others words it’s something that you want to build around.
What? Sports blazer
Why?
Not sure what we have in mind here? Think how slick Ray Donovan looks rocking a blazer. Second only to the white shirt, a sports blazer should also be a part of your closet thanks to its versatility. It can make you look more formal (a last minute meeting or the unannounced client visit) or dressy casual (a weekend event with your lady, throw it on with some jeans and you’re good to go). Beware, to keep that versatility stick to solid colors like navy blue, black or given that it is summer, a light grey or khaki is also appropriate. Patterns and pinstripes will limit the flexibility and give it a shorter shelf life. Also, and most importantly since where talking about summers style hear, be sure the material is light. Linen is great for summer, but tough to maintain, a khaki material is perfect, as it’s lighter and easy to maintain.
What? Black leather belt
Why?
This one is more than just for keeping your slacks up. Going without a belt is considered a fashion faux pas. Think of it like wearing white after Labor Day. Best bet is to have one that doesn’t overwhelm whatever you’re wearing, so stay away from flashy patterns or big buckles. A classic black leather belt can be worn with slacks, a suit or even jeans and save the day.
What? Denim jeans
Why?
There are a plethora of jeans out there on the market; super trendy brands like 7 For All Mankind to old school mainstays like Levi’s. There is no shortage of cuts either, from slim to boot cut. Irrespective of the choices every man should (and probably does) own at least one good pair. While they tend to be more prevalent in casual settings, they really can be the starting point for any look. For dressier settings, pair them with lace ups or loafers and a blazer. For a more casual look they can go with a basic tee and some kicks. Just note, the stone/acid/worn look is not a good look these days. Stick to solid colors.
What? Solid White Sneakers
The athlesiure look is all the rage these days. It’s now acceptable to wear a nice set of white kicks to many offices for summer Friday’s and hit the town too. Tastes may vary, for gent’s that prefer to stick with the classics Nike Air Force One’s and Adidas Shell Tops are a mainstay. Stan Smith’s Adidas are also having a moment. Whatever your choice a pair of nice Sunday whites are versatile as they can be paired with shorts and t-shirt, or dressed up with jeans and a blazer. Either are can’t lose looks.
What? Loafers or Lace Ups
Why?
We can’t forget the feet. Now some may not dig the loafer look, but that doesn’t mean these puppies can’t carry the day. Structurally they are easy to slip-on and off, stylistically a pair of black or dark brown loafers can be paired with formal slacks or denim jeans. Their minimalist look will ensure their classic and timeless nature. Not a loafer fan than wear a simple pair of black or dark brown lace-up shoes to get you out of a pinch.
