5 Cultural Influencers You Need to Follow

cultural-influencers

Social Network, social media, marketing

While wading through the white noise that Twitter can be –“Look at me!”, “Buy this!”, “I’m cool!!”– we discovered that there are some folks in the Twitterverse who consistently deliver 280 characters that we’re eager to read, see and hear. Whether it be humor, inspiration, provocative statements or simply information we didn’t know we needed. Here’s a short list of our top picks.

LeJuan James, Comedian

LeJuan James’ comedy is the definition of viral. Using his own experience of growing up in a Puerto Rican/Dominican household he points out the comical cultural differences that make Latinos so unique. Whether it’s how our parents don’t like anybody we bring home or how yelling is how we often communicate, he takes pride in making everyone ROFL with his videos and commentary. Check him out for all the humor, hysteria, shouts outs and sports analysis your feed can hold.

Julio Varela, Blogger, Founder of LatinoRebels.com

Love him or hate him you can’t ignore him. La rebeldia of the website Latino Rebels stems from the brain of Varela, who wanted a space to discuss Latino issues and crush perceptions with humor and wit. His own personal feed accomplishes much of the same. Whether discussing the Puerto Rico debt crisis, the upcoming Presidential election or sharing baseball highlights, Varela stays connected to his digital following making this Boricua one who can’t be ignored when he uses his timeline to share the news of the day on everything from immigrant deportation to the Red Sox.

Massy Arias, Fitness Expert

Massy is #gymgoals all day, everyday. While this dominicana started using social media to share her personal wellness journey with the world, it’s since propelled her professionally. Her current occupation? Celebrity health trainer and digital media motivator. Arias has since used social media to spread her fitness gospel: progress not perfection via working out and eating right. Whether it’s sharing instructional exercise videos, healthy recipes, or her personal transformation she shares enough motivation to keep her fans, followers and the everyday Jose wanting more.

Being Latino/Lance Rios

Memes and comedy are a way of life for this social media powerhouse that boasts the biggest digital footprint on the web today. Founded by Lance Rios the social media brand is all about highlighting what’s awesome about our culture as well as delivering “the inside joke”– namely poking fun at everything that’s hysterical (wait for it…) being Latino from you Selena Gomez memes, to karaoke videos to fuzzy animals. As the man with the plan, Lance spends much of his time creating these feel good bites of cultura that make us chuckle.

Alicia Menendez, Anchor & Special Correspondent, Fusion

All you need to know about Alicia Menendez, the Cuban American that the The Washington Post called “Ms. Millenial”, is that her first nightly show was called “Come Here and Say That.” Provocative much? Menendez is only somewhat less confrontational on her Twitter feed where she shares her adventures (moderating the network’s Democratic debate, visits to Congress) and short videos and pics of her interviews (hi Mindy Kaling). Oh and lest we forget, she sounds off on her flight mates reading materials as well as the pain of teaching your parents about technology. Seriously, Alicia, you get us. You really, really do.
