It was a rematch eight years in the making and it lived up to the hype. Juan Francisco ‘El Gallo’ Estrada and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez faced off against each other at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
El Gallo came out of the gate fast and aggressive in the opening round consistently pressuring Chocolatito. While Estrada had some success, it was short lived. As Gonzalez appeared to take over the fight until the halfway mark. Using his trademark forward momentum and putting together solid combinations. While Estrada responded in kind, Chocolatito’s punches seemed to carry more weight and effectiveness. Yet, midway through the bout Gonzalez seem to briefly fade. Estrada took advantage of this lull and swung the momentum back into his favor, even walking Gonzalez back at one moment. Something rarely, if ever, seen in Gonzalez career. Although Chocolatito seemed to catch a second wind, it did not appear to be enough, as Estrada did not relent.
After 12 rounds, Estrada won the bout on on two of the three of the judges scorecards. By scores of 115-113, 117-111 and losing on the third judges card by 113-115. The biggest question of the night. When can we see Chocolatito vs. Estrada 3?
