You know Latinos love us some drama! Whether it is an over-the-top novela, or fine tuning the art of chisme on El Gordo y La Flaca. That’s why if you think about it Friday the 13th is tailor made for us. Because everyone is on high alert for — some drama. With that in mind we thought it an apropos time to look back at some our top cultural superstitions.
1. Teeth Falling Out
If you dream about your teeth falling out while eating, it means someone is going to die. Or you simply haven’t made that long overdue trip to the dentist. Neither is a good look.
2. Glass of Water Behind the Door
A full glass of water behind the door is supposed to absorb bad spirits and energy in your house. For some reason, this also applied to elephants. So, throughout the years a ton of porcelain elephants get exchanged in Latino households.
3. Upside Down Broom
Want to get rid of that houseguest that has overstayed their welcome? An upside down broom behind the door is said to get rid of unwanted visitors. Does that apply to ex-girlfriends too?
4. El Cucuy
Not a superstition per se, El Cucuy falls more into the category of urban legend (think Big Foot). However, if you don’t know or haven’t heard of El Cucuy, you may need to turn in your Latino card. He’s our form of The Boogeyman, but with a vigilante streak in him and no less frightening to young an old alike. Don’t believe us, check out the video below.
