The Tribeca Film Festival was born out of the roots of tragedy. After 9/11 it was formed with the objective of helping to revitalize lower Manhattan, but also to celebrate the world of film. Now in its 16th year tragedy has become triumph as the global film community gathers to share their stories. The festival starts April 19th and runs through April 30th. From live panels, to feature films and shorts, we’ve canvassed the slate for all things Latino for you ‘LLERO’s to enjoy.

Tribeca Talks: Directors Series | Alejandro González Iñárritu with Marina Aramovic
Alejandro González Iñárritu is a two-time Academy Award winner and will appear live to talk with performance artist Marina Abramović about his resume of work on films such as Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Biutiful, Birdman, and most recently, The Revenant. The panel begins at 2:30 p.m., on April 22, 2017 at SVA Theatre.
Tribeca Talks: Storytellers | Robert Rodriguez & Barbara Streisand
Robert Rodriguez is a film director, screenwriter, producer and editor. His film resume includes, El Mariachi, Desperado, Sin City and Machete. But Rodriguez is also the founder of El Rey Network, a 24-hour, English-language network. He joins entertainment icon Barbara Streisand to discuss creativity in filmmaking. The panel begins at 6:00 p.m., on April 29, 2017 at BAMCC.

On Thanksgiving in 1999 two fishermen on the Florida Straits found a young Cuban boy, Elián González, floating alone in an inner tube. Their discovery evolved into a custody battle between Elián’s Cuban father and his Miami-located relatives that captured the world’s attention and brought the conflict between Cuba and the U.S. to the forefront. Eighteen years later a now grown-up Elián Gonzalez tells his own side of the story. Directed by Tim Golden, Ross McDonnell. In English, Spanish with subtitles.
Nobody’s Watching (Nadie Nos Mira) (Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Spain)
World premiering at the festival Nobody’s Watching tells the story of Nico, a successful soap opera actor in his native Argentina who gives up a successful career in his homeland for a chance to make it in New York City. Yet, after arriving in the big apple, Nico finds himself staying afloat with odd jobs from bartending to babysitting. In a moving depiction of the vibrant city, Nobody’s Watching questions who is watching and how we adjust ourselves accordingly. Directed by Julia Solomonoff and written by Julia Solomonoff and Christina Lazaridi, starring Guillermo Pfening, Rafael Ferro, Paola Baldion, Elena Roger, Cristina Morrison, Kerri Sohn, Marco Antonio Caponi. Sambá (Dominican Republic)
Directed by Laura Amelia Guzmán and Israel Cárdenas, and written by Ettore D’Alessandro and Carolina Encarnacion. Sambá is also making its world premiere at this year’s festival. After spending 15 years in an American jail, Cisco has returned to the Dominican Republic yet is unable to get a job, a problem compounded by his mother’s ailing health and his younger brother’s delinquent habits. To make money, he’s resorted to illegal street fighting. But Cisco finds a possible salvation in Nichi, an Italian ex-boxer who sees dollar signs in Cisco’s gritty fighting skills. A River Below (Colombia, USA)
Deep in the Amazon, a renowned marine biologist and a reality TV star are each working to save the indigenous pink river dolphin from being hunted to extinction. When a scandal erupts, ethical questions are raised as murky as the waters of the Amazon River. Mark Grieco’s (Marmato) surprising documentary digs into the ethics of activism in the modern media age. In English, Portuguese, Spanish with subtitles and will have a special Earth Day Screening

Dive (Salta) (Venezuela)
Directed by Marianne Amelinckx. Julia goes back to the pool and remembers that, sometimes, life challenges ourselves to keep going and make decisions. In Spanish with subtitles.
The Goodfight (Brazil, U.K., USA)
Directed and written by Ben Holman, written by Ben Holman. Following a personal tragedy, Alan Duarte opens his own boxing gym to offer salvation and hope to others in the notorious gun violence- ridden favela in Rio de Janeiro where he was born and lives. In Portuguese with subtitles.
The Holdouts (Colombia)
The Western hemisphere’s oldest civil war is still going strong in the jungles of Colombia. The National Liberation Army (ELN) —a Marxist military organization— has been fighting for revolution since 1964, and with the FARC having declared a ceasefire, the ELN is today the last active guerrilla army in the Americas.
