What Does Wellness Actually Mean For Men?

Arguably, wellness is a men’s issue.

Overall, men are more than three times as likely as women to take their lives, especially young men.

Men’s wellness, therefore, is at rock bottom. Most men lead unhappy lives, working extremely hard, but not seeing the fruits of their labor. To make matters worse, they often have to play second fiddle in their relationships: the primary goal is to satisfy the other person.

It’s a messy setup, and it’s having a profound effect on the happiness and function of individual men and society at large.

The problem we have right now is that we don’t have a good concept of what wellness for men looks like. Yes, you want a job, an income, and the material resources to function. But what else do men need to ensure that they remain happy throughout their lives? It’s not clear.

Here, we’re going to unpack some of these issues and ask a fundamental question: what do men need for wellness?

It Starts With Health

Health, not wealth, is your number one resource. If you were to give George Soros a billion dollars or a twenty-year-old body, he’d take the body every time.

The reason for this is that your health is a necessary condition for wealth. You can always go out, grab a job, and start earning money. With health, it’s a little trickier.

Health is the foundation of wellness. Do whatever you can to achieve it. Eat more vegetables. Stop drinking. See a therapist. Get a diet coach. Even go on a men’s drug rehab program if substances are a part of your life. Fix your health, and the rest of it will follow much more quickly.

Make Every Day A Challenge

We all seek comfort. We want it. It makes us feel good and removes responsibility from our laps.

Unfortunately, it’s a trap. Comfort doesn’t breed comfort – it breeds pain. When you don’t fight every day for the things you want, you feel you’ve robbed yourself of an opportunity. You’re not earning life satisfaction when you don’t pour your heart into whatever you’re doing. It’s a path to the dark side of life.

Every day should be about maximum effort to get to where you want to go. Pain is a friend because it gives you that deep sense of satisfaction that you crave. The success of building bigger muscles, setting up a business, or learning a new skill is vital for feeling as if you have a life worth living.

Clean Up Your Mind

Wellness is about knowing yourself. You don’t have to be alpha to be happy. Set the goals that matter to you. Block out the noise. Focus on creating your own value and say no to the negative voices in your head that try to get the better of you. They’re not worth it.

Furthermore, most men are reliant on the women in their lives for emotional support, not other men.

Finally, most men believe that the emotional wellbeing of their partner is more important than their own.
