Joe Quesada

The biggest news off the pulp this year had to be Joe Quesada. The former Marvel Comics Editor-In-Chief is switching teams and going to rival D.C. Comics!

Quesada appeared as guest at the Jim Lee & Friends panel Thursday afternoon where the news was announced. Quesada left Marvel earlier this year to pursue personal projects.

So, what will Quesada do at D.C?  Designing covers for comics in 2023 – first up will be The Dark Knight himself. Jumping around is quite common in the industry, but for folks of Quesada’s stature the move is noteworthy for sure!

The Small Screen

The Walking Dead

The cast of The Walking Dead gathered for a panel to celebrate the final episodes of the long running series.

Moderated by longtime Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick cast members Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohen, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lauren Ridloff, Eleanor Matsuura, Michael James Shaw and Paola Lazaro were in the house.

The cast discussed the various spin-offs in production, including Norman Reedus stand-alone series for Daryl and Maggie and Negan teaming up for their own show Dead City to be filmed in New Jersey and New York.  As for the mother ship series, the cast was cryptic about its ending. However, show writer Scott Gimble was also on the panel and told the audience “It all comes together…it means that all these characters come to their conclusions, their final forms, you know, they move to their final Pokemon, as it were…we do tell the end of the story of The Walking Dead. Yes, there are these other shows, but this is how everything does come together into what it all meant.”

Guess this means were just going to have to tune in to find out.

Wednesday

In other small screen developments, the cast of Netflix upcoming Addams Family spin-off Wednesday were also in the house.

Stars Jenna Ortega, Luis Guzmán and Gwendoline Christie, as well as showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar took part in a panel which they shared tidbits about their characters and how the current show honors the past but also tells a new story all its own, which fans have not seen.

They also brought goodies. In the form of a trailer and special cast announcement. Uncle Fester is played by none other than Fred Armisen, who made a surprise appearance and takes a prominent role in the trailer.

Wednesday and Fester reconnect after Armisen’s character has flown in to see the Addams Family teen and check-in on how she’s doing. Fester admits he did the same for her father, Gomez, before telling Wednesday what he’s heard: “He filled me in on what’s been going on: Monsters, murder, mayhem — what fun.”

Peep the trailer here.

The Big Screen

Back to the Future Reunion

New York Comic-Con also had its share of big screen attractions. In perhaps the marquee event of the weekend. Stars of Back to the Future – Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reunited and shared behind the scenes stories of the making of the film and the lasting impact it has today.

Lloyd spoke of the surprise casting of Fox “The announcement at one o’clock in the morning after we were shooting for six weeks, was that the actor playing Marty would no longer be playing Marty and that tomorrow, we would start shooting with Michael,” Lloyd recalled via People. “I felt that I barely made it through the [first] six weeks and now I was gonna have to do it again… There was immediate chemistry, as they say.”

Chemistry indeed, as the reunion was emotional for fans and stars alike as both hugged and were visibly touched to be together again.

Oscar Isaac Spotlight

Star of such films as Star Wars and Dune. As well as the  Disney+ series Moon Knight Oscar Isaac closed out Comic Con on Sunday with its first ever Spotlight panel.

Isaac fielded questions from both the audience and panel moderator about his career.

He spoke briefly about his time in Star Wars. His connection with the late Carrie Fisher inparticular. Stating of Fisher, “We just immediately hit it off, and she felt very much like family. You know, warm and funny and damaged like my family and like me.” Isaac also previewed the graphic novel “Head Wounds: Sparrow,” which he co-developed.

Then there was his Disney+ show Moon Knight, Isaac told the audience “I saw this opportunity to talk about something that’s often difficult to talk about, but using the language of comics, myth, and the literal underworld to talk about the underworld of the human psyche.”  The moderator tried to tease out of the actor whether there would be Season 2, to which Isaac stated, “the end of Moon Knight is not the last that you’ve heard of the system that is Moon Knight.”

Way to close out a show and leave the fans wanting more Oscar!
